Strategic Mistake?

I'm struck by a contradiction surrounding gay politics in the Golden State.

Reading action alerts from Equality California, one gets the impression that same-sex marriage is poised for imminent passage in the state. As early as today, the Assembly will take up a bill to delete the "different gender" legal requirement. Yet EQCA also issued dire announcements in recent weeks about a pending voter initiative that would eliminate all rights and protections for domestic partners -- forget about letting homos marry!

So which is it, Ben? Are wedding bells ringing for you and Kevin, or are your rights as registered DPs about to be stripped? Maybe it's both: Consider whether moving too quickly to grant full marriage rights now may trigger a backlash among the electorate that would tip the initiative towards victory in November.
