The Schwartz Is With Us?

Who'd a thunk Republican DC Councilwoman (and noted chainsmoker) Carol Schwartz would ever move on her committee's consideration of a bill to ban smoke at city restaurants and bars? It's true her compromise proposal doesn't go quite as far as the Smokefree DC people would like -- rather than prohibit smoking it offers what look like serious economic incentives to run non-smoking establishments -- but I frankly never thought we'd even see this much effort out of the tobacco lady.

P.S. Meanwhile, I get an alert today that David ("No new baseball stadium") Catania has had a change of heart over supporting the ban. Just another example of him flip-flopping to drum up support his future mayoral campaign, I suppose.
