Easily Distracted - Our erstwhile London correspondent sends a letter bearing good news for U.S. drivers and typographic trivia fans. It appears that a new font has been approved for use on American interstate highway signage. He discovered this welcome change to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices ("MUTCD") when an e-mail discussion about the relative merits of Portland, OR vs. Seattle, WA got him searching for the termini of U.S. Route 26. Said correspondent opines as to the ClearviewHwy® font: "I like it."

Perhaps they will use the new style of signs on whatever becomes of Indiana's I-69 extension, which is soon to be renamed because the "immoral number" embarrasses Christian conservatives. (Hat tip to Wonkette via Chrisafer.)
