Keeping Up With The Goldsteins - According to the LA Daily News the latest teenage party craze is the 'faux mitzvah': "For many non-Jewish kids, it's not enough just to turn 13. They've partied at exuberant bar or bat mitzvahs with Jewish friends that can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Now they want them, too." Says one rabbi, "I think it's beautiful -- only in America. Only in America do we have this wonderful appreciation for cultural things." Eh, more likely, only in the Valley do kids have a high enough percentage of affluent Jewish friends where they start to feel jealous of the parties and want one of their own. Unfortunately, I moved to Southern California a bit too late to be included in the bar mitzvah circuit of my peers.
