And though she can seem distracted by the precision the choreography requires, Madonna worked so hard on stage that she ignited a crowd that's already burning with affection for her: Rarely have I seen such joy in audiences; they were positively giddy at times. Evenings this special don't require lame political statements or unfocused provocations. Clearly, music and genuine showmanship were the best parts of the event, and the only ones that mattered.
