Patty Bouvier almost got married last night on The Simpsons...to a man! Yes, the shocking secret was that Patty's gay marriage was almost a heterosexual marriage. Once it was revealed that Patty's bethrothed had an Adam's apple, love did not trump all: Patty declared that she needed the pusetta.
The underlying message I took away from the episode is that gay marriage is good for tourism and the economy, so let the shopping begin! (Oh yeah, civil rights and love between two people are kinda important as well). It's too bad that L. Brent Bozell didn't get that memo. His response to the episode (before seeing it) was "At a time when the public mood is overwhelmingly against gay marriage, any show that promotes gay marriage is deliberately bucking the public mood." Uh, right, because going against societal mores is such an unusual form of entertainment, especially for The Simpsons.
