Artistic License - Is it art or is it bad spelling? That's the question facing the City of Livermore, California, as an art installation at the public library features 11 misspelled words and names. While some claim that the artist has a right to take license and spell things as she sees fit, others have been calling the muralist to harass her for her poor English skills. She sounds pretty whiny to me...if she was really working that hard on the piece, then she could have cracked open a dictionary or encyclopedia to make sure she wasn't making any errors. Especially since they paid her $40K to do so.

There have been creative suggestions about how to remedy the situation, including the placement of an adjacent plaque that notes the mistakes and asks children to find and note them. But since, by law, public art cannot be removed without the permission of the artist, the City Council is going to have to cough up some cash in any regard...either to have it removed or to fly the artist out to fix the piece.
