Don't Stand In Line, Go Online - With the new fiscal year kicking off, the Schwarzenegger administration is announcing a very sensible and long-overdue (read: duh!) change to the way the California Department of Motor Vehicles does business. Ahnuld has "canceled the pesky $4 'convenience fee' starting today," that the DMV charges to renew autombile registration online. With "more than 60 percent of the customers who walk into the DMV's field offices stand in line to register vehicles," you can understand why, especially in a wired state, the old policy made absolutely no sense. Not only that, but "processing registrations made in person costs California $10.34 each, compared with $3 online." The state was charging a convenience fee for something that has a lower total cost! One example where common sense has finally won out.
