Day Late, Dollar Short? - What does it say about the disorganized and ineffective state of gay politics in Virginia that the most pro-gay and most prominent newspaper covering the Old Dominion has only just woken up to the evils of the Marriage Affirmation Act? Sure it's nice to see a powerful newspaper decry this pernicious act of gratuitous anti-gay bigotry, but where was the Washington Post when the legislature was reinstating the law over Governor Warner's veto-amendment, let alone when the law was originally passed? It would have been nice to have some support when it could have made a difference.

(For an explainer on this piece of legislative crap, see this Blade article.)

I don't know if the recent post-hoc publicity for Virginia's outrageous superDOMA has anything to do with the mega-bloggers who have talked it up this week. As noted here earlier, Andrew Sullivan has been venting about it in the past few days - especially in calling "compassionate" conservatives to task for not speaking out against it. And Eugene Volokh weighed in today with a post entitled "What's wrong with private civil union contracts?" Now if the InstaPundit would just pick it up, we might have traction.

The Post's editorial suggests that there might be a judicial solution to Virginia's overreaching. (Something suggested some time ago by the Beav.) Well, maybe. I am going to try to make it to an all-hands strategy session that Equality Virginia has called for May 20th in Arlington. According to my email alert, the heads of both HRC and the NGLTF will be there, along with lots of friendlies from local and statewide politics. Is the MAA enough to galvanize us? Will the right wingers rue the day they finally went too far? (I know I feel like fighting.) We'll have to see, and I'll try to stay optimistic for now.
