Movie Madness - Sum of All Fears was somewhat entertaining, but doesn't rank high on my recommendation list. It seemed to me that Jack Ryan didn't have a whole lot to actually do in the movie. Ben Affleck mostly followed Morgan Freeman around to meetings. And who knew that tense, high-stakes nuclear negotiations take place via instant messenger?
Roger Ebert makes a great point about the Hollywood ending...the film ends with Ben Affleck and his girlfriend having a picnic on the White House lawn, which is great, as long as you disregard the fact that Baltimore is in ruins 40 miles away. I mean, the destruction of Baltimore is no great loss, but tens of thousands of people are dead, not exactly something to celebrate with a Rose Garden ceremony. I'm very curious about how future Tom Clancy books will be adapted now. Sum was modified to fit the profile of a younger Jack Ryan since Ben Affleck is 30 years old. But how can Ryan become Vice President and President (like he does in the books) if he not only lacks the experience for the jobs, but also isn't even old enough to legally fulfill the roles?
Importance of Being Earnest - I always enjoy the work of Reese Witherspoon (who overlapped with me at Stanford before dropping out). She was brilliant in Election and winning while tapping her little Pradas in Legally Blonde. Dame Judy was over-the-top, chewing the scenery every time she appeared, but I mean that in a good way, it fit the role. Having never read the book, I was very entertained by the Wilde farce.
