Vegan Terrorists

A sideshow to the recent revelations about domestic spying by the Bush administration is the FBI's surveillance of "groups active in causes as diverse as the environment, animal cruelty and poverty relief," the NYTimes reports. Documents released under FOIA as a result of ACLU lawsuits reveal counterterrorism programs such as the "Vegan Community Project," which focused on the grave national threat posed by Norfolk-based animal rights group PETA.

Because, let's face it, can we really trust people so un-American that they don't eat meat?

Update: Under the headline "Pentagon Labels Gay Kiss-In a 'Credible Threat'", the SLDN is reporting that the DOD has also been keeping records of student groups and protests opposed to Don't Ask-Don't Tell.

P.S. In related news, foreign governments are pissed that Google Earth's spy satellites can help terrorists and unfriendly nations see into their leadership compounds and military installations. Indian, South Korean and Russian officials complain that U.S. law restricts Google from displaying high-value American targets (and, incidentally, Israeli) but not theirs.
