This effort to increase diversity on campus is complicated by the fact that many gay high school students are not yet out of the closet. However, the subtle way in which schools are marketing themselves as gay-friendly is an intelligent move. The atmosphere on a campus is important, even to those students who are, and may remain, closeted. So even though they may never join the campus LGBTQ group, knowing that the environment will not be hostile could be an important consideration to a questioning student.
