Best I can tell, they meant to liken the orbiter to a classy vintage vehicle whose popularity as a hotrod couldn't sustain it in the era of fuel efficiency and cheap imports. Given STS's safety record, maybe the Corvair would have been a better comparison - or possibly the Gremlin.
