In terms of the perpetrator, I say lock up these murderous predators and make efforts to identify them before they strike. However, in terms of the victims, don't blame technology, address the root cause of why the child is seeking out attention. Of course a girl who is taken away from her parents might have issues of self-esteem and the need for attention. The cliche of a "perfect, grade-A student, cheerleader" only serves to reinforce the many different ways that coping with adversity can manifest itself. This crime could have been prevented, not through draconian measures of Internet security, but through good parenting.
